Repair / Maintenance

Your home comfort system is most likely the single biggest use of energy in your home. In fact, over a third of the energy used in the United States is used to heat and cool buildings. Having a properly maintained heating and air conditioning system will have the biggest impact on your energy costs.

Your furnace is no different than any other major machine. Just like your vehicle needs oil changes, new filters, service inspections and minor repairs over time, your furnace also needs a small amount of ongoing attention to help you get the greatest comfort, efficient and lifespan out of your system.

Furnace maintenance involves checking all of the system’s essential components and adjusting, cleaning, testing, and/or lubricating them, as needed. One of the most important benefits of annual furnace maintenance is safety. This is because gas leaks as well as improper gas connections can pose a hazard.

If it's time for maintenance or in the event that you do need a repair, don't hesitate to contact Lake Contracting.

So how are you supposed to know when your furnace needs repaired?

Unfortunately, furnace problems at some point or another are inevitable, especially as the unit gets older. Because your unit plays such an important role in your comfort and safety, scheduling timely furnace repairs is essential. Some of the most common issues that will require repairs include:
Old age
Most furnaces have a life expectancy between 15 and 20 years. If your furnace is approaching its 20th year, it's a good time to begin looking for its replacement.
Constant repairs
One telltale sign of a furnace at the end of its life is the need for frequent repairs. If you find yourself needing a repair service every other month, this could indicate that it's time for a replacement.
Inadequate heat
If your furnace is no longer fulfilling your heating needs, it's time for an upgrade. Sometimes, we outgrow our furnaces whether we add on to our homes or grow our families. You need a heating system that can supply your home with adequate heat.
Abnormal furnace smells
Furnaces can smell like the fuel that they use, especially when they turn on for the first time in a year. Most furnace odors dissipate as the unit runs. However, if you notice a strong smell of fuel around the unit, an odor that appears suddenly or a scent that doesn't go away over time, you may have a furnace problem.
Difficulty starting the unit
As a furnace ages, you may have more trouble turning the unit on and keeping it running. If you have to try multiple times to start the unit or restart your furnace throughout the day, you likely need a repair.
Discolored pilot light
Pay attention to the color of your pilot light. A healthy pilot light usually appears blue. A pilot light of a different color, especially yellow, can indicate a ventilation problem. The color change occurs when gases like carbon monoxide don't dissipate as they should.
Increase of utility bills
Compare your utility bills from month to month. If you notice a steady increase, this could indicate that your furnace is consuming more energy to operate. This tends to happen as our furnaces grow older and therefore weaker.
